Admiral Robins’ lips were a thin hard line as gazed through his binoculars. His plan was going perfectly. Four ships from Suzy fell into formation behind the four from Pansy in the bright dawn off the coast of Amber. “Today is a good day to die,” he muttered, “especially for Kent Prior and his vassal Andrew Earl.” An ensign ran up.

“Seven Prior ships spotted, sir, and three Earls. We’re outnumbered,” he gasped.

Robins swallowed his disappointment. He had hoped to find his opponents divided. But it was too late to back out now. And he still had the element of surprise. “All the better,” he grinned. “The war will be over by nightfall.” Inwardly he was not so confident. “We’re in God’s hands now,” he thought.

The defenders’ advance squadron of KP-Volen, KP-Bearclaw and AE-Olkopi bore the full brunt of the opening salvo. Shell after shell bounced off their armour, 27 in all. Then the Earls and Priors replied with their own guns: 19 shells, which sank AR-Pythia and damaged the engines of AR-Pisa and AR-Platea. Finally, five shells from AR-Pylos completed the barrage.

It was nearly noon. The ensigns’ blue eyes shone with excitement, his young face glistening with sweat. “Bad luck, sir,” he said, “but we’ll beat them yet.”

Admiral Robins knew better. The enemy had torpedoes, and he didn’t. The battle was already lost. And the rules of war allow of no retreat. “Message to all captains: stand by to abandon ship.”

One by one the torpedoes found their mark, and one by one the Robins ships shuddered, rolled and sank beneath the waves, never to rise again.

THASSALOCRACY

Yes, I know, it should have been ThaLASSocracy, but it is too late to change it now!

Andrew Earl says 1997, Rick Westera says 1999. It clearly grew out of Merchant Banker II.

MERCHANT BANKER II

I have no dates for this, but it clearly grew out of the first Merchant Banker.
